City of Malibu Permits Strike Green
Malibu is pulling out the stops to encourage the use of eco-friendly building materials. The City Council and Planning Commission have proposed a citywide sustainable development ordinance. The new regulation would involve city approval of any new construction or major remodeling projects. LEED, Leadership of Energy and Environmental Design, would back any large projects and deem them as either conforming to the new "green" standard, or falling short.

The city of Malibu is not just focusing on residential jobs, but also on commercial buildings. Water use, weather proofing, recyclable collection areas, and air conditioning refrigerants will all be subject to inspection. Commercial buildings have to reach the new environmental code by August of this year. Residential projects, whether under the new construction policy or a facet of remodeling, will also be bound by the greener codes by 2011. Residents also be encouraged to use water conservation methods and develop environmentally friendly landscaping.

The city of Malibu is taking the plight of the environment seriously and with the implementation of this new "green" ordinance, other cities might also follow suit. Certain incentives could be in the works, to further entice resident's to adhere to the green way of living. The city is weighing the incentive options at this time. Some ideas include the waiving of permit fees, or at least imposing a rate cut. Another incentive includes a quicker permit turnaround wait time.

Different proposals are being considered by the city of Malibu. In the near future, specific ordinances will be in place, leading to a greener Malibu and more content home and business owners.
