Over 100 Years of Cool
It was 1902 and just one year after William Haviland Carrier graduated from Cornell University in Engineering, that he invented the first air conditioner. The “father of air conditioning” is considered to be William Carrier, but the term “air conditioning” belongs to Stuart H. Cramer, a textile engineer. In 1911, Carrier introduced the Rational Psychrometric Formulae to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and it still remains the foundation for all air conditioning industry calculations.

Many people should be grateful to Carrier today for revolutionizing indoor cool air. Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and Malibu residents have a lot to thank Carrier for, without even realizing it. Imagine life without air conditioning. People would conceivably flock to beach towns like Pacific Palisades on a much grander scale than today, just to escape the valley heat. Pacific Palisade’s would have experienced bumper-to-bumper traffic daily and severe overcrowded streets while visitors tried desperately to take advantage of the Pacific Palisades cool beach air.

The invention of air conditioning has changed lives. Today, people still travel to beautiful Pacific Palisades, but more so now to take in the view. Air conditioners have become commonplace and maybe somewhat taken for granted, but when this July 17th hits and another air conditioning anniversary passes, take a moment to thank William Carrier.
