Sherman Oaks Landmark Cools Down
It’s been nearly eight years since Kester Elementary School in Sherman Oaks California, received state of the art air-conditioning units. This quaint little Sherman Oaks school, designed fifty years ago, by architect Richard Neutra, became the last of Los Angeles Unified schools to be fully air conditioned.

Neutra wanted to create a more relaxed learning environment with the use of sliding walls opening up to covered patios. The classrooms were devised with a living room type feel. Expansive windows provided cross ventilation, while the covered walkways allowed for shade. His idea worked for many years, but with the high San Fernando temperatures, staff and students felt that air conditioning would be an asset. Finding the right air conditioning system, that wouldn’t take away from the architecture, would be the goal.

It took a full two years of planning for the right air-conditioning system to be discovered. Preserving the historical site, meant not installing units in the windows or walls. With a cost of $294,000 the blueprints were drawn up in 2000, and a year later, the Sherman Oaks School had rooftop air-conditioners, with the original construction in tact.
